One chilly and rainy morning on the last day of April, five dolls were out taking their dogs for a walk.
“Some weather we’re having, huh?” said Lily.
“Yeah, it’s supposed to be spring but it still kind of feels like winter,” Ann answered.
“I really hope it clears up this afternoon because Alexis’s birthday is today,” said Saige, “a whole bunch of new outfits and gifts arrived in the mail for her. She wants to have a garden party outside but if this rain keeps up, I don’t see how that’s going to happen.”
The dogs were having a party of their own sniffing and barking at each other. They didn’t mind a few drops of rain.
Back inside the house, Alexis had just woken up with a sad sigh as she looked out the window. Well, she thought, Even if it’s raining it’s still my birthday and I’m going to be happy and celebrate even if we have to do it inside.
She climbed the ladder to where Tatiana was sleeping on the top bunk.
“Tatiana, wake up! It’s my birthday!”
“Mmm. It’s my night….day… go to sleeep…”
“No silly! I said it’s my birthday and we have to get ready for the party. We can wear our brand new party dresses!”
“Hmm, what? Today’s the day?! Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Happy birthday Alexis!” Tatiana reached over to give her a hug.
As the girls got ready the rain stopped and the sun came out. Tatiana slid into her pretty party dress and called to Alexis who was in the shower, “I’m going outside to get everything set up. It stopped raining!”
Mary Grace, Keisha and Lea arrived and helped Tatiana set up the birthday table.
“There! We’re all ready. Now we just need the birthday girl,” said Lea as she put the crown on top of Alexis’s present to add the finishing touch.
“And here she is!” announced Alexis as she waltzed in wearing a beautiful dress of eyelet lace. She put the crown on her head to exclamations of ‘Happy Birthday Alex’ and instructions to open presents from the guests.
Alexis opened the first card and read, “From Tatiana and Lea: We are so excited that you are going to help us host the Dollolympics this summer in Rio. We made sure you got your passport in time!”
And out of the card fell Alexis’s own passport.
“Wow, thanks so much you guys! I’m super excited about this summer too.”
The next present was from Mary-Grace and Keisha.
“A nature book!” Alexis beamed at them, “You guys picked my favorite things: reading and going outside to enjoy nature. I can’t wait to read it.”
“Yeah,” Mary Grace smiled, “Does that book look familiar to you? It’s the sequel to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
“Thanks so much for all the gifts. Now it’s time for cake and ice cream!” Alexis announced.
The girls sang Happy Birthday and ate their chocolate swirl cake with relish.
Alex felt she had had one of the best birthday parties a girl could have!
