The dolls and I have been waiting and waiting for some snow to fall, and finally last weekend we got a big whopping 1/2 inch of snow! It was just enough for the dolls to enjoy.
“Suki!” cried Jacky excitedly, “quick get your snowpants on before the snow melts!”
“I don’t think it’s going to melt, silly, it’s 14 degrees outside and cloudy. But I haven’t gotten to play outside in the snow all year! I can’t wait!”
“Are you ready? Let’s go!”
Jacky grabbed the snow tube on her way out as they tromped outside in the boots and gear.
“Who wants to go down the hill first?” asked Jacky
“You can. And I”ll push you.”
“Ready? One, Two, THREE!”
Jacky slid down the hill and when she came back up she had an idea.
“Suki, how about both of us go at once, then we won’t have to take turns.”
“Are you sure we’ll fit?”
“Sure! It’ll be fun.”
“Okay,” said Suki apprehensively, “I’ll sit first.” Suki felt a bit tentative to slide down the hill. She wasn’t nearly as brave or daring as Jacky. She figured if she sat first, Jacky would be the one to fall off.
Jacky ended up kind of laying on top of her so she could see.
“All set? Let’s scooch and go!”
Suki gave a push and then suddenly they were screaming down the hill.
As they got closer to the bottom they picked up more speed and suddenly the tube hit a rock and both of them flew out and landed on their bottoms in a heap.
They both burst out laughing.
“That was awesome! Let’s do it again!” Jacky rolled over and found herself looking at a pair of snowshoes.
It was Elianna. “Hey guys! It looks like you’re having fun!”
“Yeah, you want to join us? We just slid down the hill together. We could make a trio and see how many dolls can slide down in the tube!”
“That does sound fun, but I’m actually on my way to watch a skiing competition and I don’t want to be late.”
“A skiiing competition?” Suki asked.
“Yeah, it’s the state championship race between Nicki, McKenna, and Megan.”
“Oooh, maybe we should come with,” Suki said wistfully.
“How about we go one more time down the hill and then we’ll catch up to Ellie,” said Jacky who really would have rather kept on sledding.
“Go two more times,” responded Elianna, “I walk slowly in these snowshoes. You’ll catch up easily. It’s straight ahead.”
Elianna hiked in her snowshoes slowly until the two laughing sledders caught up to her and they all tramped to the ski slope.
They made it just in time to see the final three top champion skiers go down.
Nicki was first and cut smooth edges in all of her turns.
Since she was the most experienced skier in the whole competition, she knew how to adjust her skis position when they started to chatter.
Nicki crouched lower in her tuck as she neared the finish line. She could hear the crowd cheering.
Her time was 2:41″ one of her fastest times ever!
Megan went next. She had a bit of a rocky start.
And then, in the middle of her race, she leaned too much to the side for a turn and almost lost her balance. To correct it, she had to stand up completely straight and lost a lot of time that way.
McKenna was a rookie but she was an up and coming shining star in the doll world of skiing and everyone was rooting for her as she passed the green flag to start her race.
McKenna was super fast with perfectly clean turns and great form in the air on her jumps.
She couldn’t believe what she heard when she got to the bottom of the hill, it turned out to be a tie between McKenna and Nicki so they had to race again against each other at the same time!
With Nicki on one side, and McKenna on the other, they took off down the hill.
They were going neck and neck the whole time.
The crowd was screaming down below, even Megan was cheering.
Snow flew out behind Nicki’s skis and landed in her soft curls as she sped down the hill.
It almost seemed as if both of them were going to tie for the second time, but Nicki put on a little more speed at the bottom…
And won the race by 8 one hundredths of a second!
“That was some race, Nicki,” McKenna congratulated, “You did an amazing job at the end.”
“You’re so much fun to race against.”
“Thanks, McKenna, you are too. I’m so happy we got enough snow to do this. I’ve been waiting for this race for a long time. Now I’ll have to work even harder for next years race so you don’t beat me. You are an amazing skier too.”
