American Girls Revue Part 5: Going to Freedom

Although Felicity’s song is my favorite, Addy’s is a close second. I would highly recommend you open this link  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCzJu7MZetI in a new tab and listen to the song as you read this post, just reading it without the music can get a little repetitive and the music and words by Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford are so powerful.

Things were getting worse for Addy and her momma on the plantation.  Addy’s poppa and big brother had just been chained up and sold by Master Stevens.

Momma: “Addy, there’s something I need to talk to you about. Something serious.  You listening to me?”

Addy: “You and Poppa planned for us all to run away.”

Momma: “How did you know that?”

Addy: “I heard ya’ll talkin’ one night.”

Momma: “Well, we still going.”

Addy: “But what about Poppa and Sam? Shouldn’t we wait for them to come back for us?”

IMG_3014[1]

Momma: “They ain’t coming back for us ever again, no matter what!  Poppa’s plan for us was to go to Philadelphia.  He told me how to reach a safe house by the railroad where we can get help.  I aim to stick to that plan and we leaving tonight!”

Addy: “Tonight!? But what if we get caught?”

Momma: “There ain’t no choice, honey! I can’t keep you safe no more.  I’m scared that man who bought Poppa and Sam is gonna come back for you!  I ain’t gonna sit here and wait for him or anybody to take you from me.

Goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, to freedom glory be.  Followin’ the North Star, travelin’ the darkness, we’re goin’ to freedom, to freedom, you and me. Goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, to freedom glory be.  Followin’ the North Star, travelin’ the darkness, we’re goin’ to freedom, to freedom, you and me.

IMG_3015[1]

Addy, put these on.”

Addy: “Momma, what we gonna do with these?”

Momma: “Gonna pack da kercheifs, gonna take some water, gonna wear disguises, you and me.  Followin’ the North Star, all the way to Philadelphia, we’re goin’ to freedom, to freedom, glory be.

Goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, to freedom glory be.  Followin’ the North Star, travelin’ the darkness, we gonna get there, to freedom glory be.

IMG_3017[1]

Auntie Lula and Uncle Solomon got us these clothes.  The dogs can’t track our smell if we got on somebody else’s clothes.”

Addy: “Auntie Lula and Uncle Solomon should come with us, Momma.”

Momma: “No, Addy.  They too old.  They can’t run.”

Addy:  “But baby Esther can’t run either.”

Momma: “Esther not comin’ with us, Addy.”

Addy: “Momma, we can’t just leave baby Esther!”

IMG_3018[1]

Momma: “Sh! Esther might cry anytime and her cryin’ would give us away.”

Addy: “But I can keep her quiet Momma, please!”

Momma: ” No Addy! Esther can’t come.  Auntie Lula and Uncle Solomon gonna take care a’ her!  The war ain’t gonna last forever.

When the war is over, we gonna get our baby. We gonna be together, together wait and see.  We gonna find our Poppa, we gonna find our brother, we gonna be a family in freedom, glory be.”

They traveled all night long and then found a little cave to sleep in during the daytime.

IMG_3019[1]

Momma: “You’re a brave girl, Addy, just like your Poppa’s grandma.  She was stole from Africa when she was no bigger than you, and she had to come across the water all alone.  But there’s one thing different about you and your great-grandma; her journey ended in slavery.  Yours girl, is taking you to freedom!”

IMG_3020[1]

Momma: “Stay down! Rebel soldier.

IMG_3021[1]

“Run!”

IMG_3022[1]

Addy: “Momma! It’s the river!

Momma: “I can’t swim!”

Addy: “We gotta go across!”

Momma: “I can’t swim!!!”

Addy: “Just hold my hand, Momma, I’ll keep you afloat.

Gonna cross the river, gonna cross the river, know we’re gonna get there, get there, wait and see.  Gotta keep a-goin’ make it through the darkness, gonna cross the river, the river, you and me!”

IMG_3023[1]

Feel the water churnin’ don’t let it take you under!

Addy: “Know we’re gonna get there, get there wait and see.  Momma keep your head up! Gotta keep a-goin’ make it through the darkness, gonna cross the river, the river, you and me!

Grab my hand, Momma!

IMG_3024[1]

Think I see a railroad, silver in the moonlight. Must be near the safe house, the safe house, let it be!”

Momma: “Yes, there’s a train approachin’ spittin’ and a-sparkin,’ smokin’ through the darkness, the darkness, glory be! Feel the ground a-tremblin’, like rollin’ thunder, hear the train a-rumblin,’ to freedom, glory be.  Gotta keep a-runnin’, make it to the safe house. I think we’re gonna make it to freedom you and me.”

Finally, Addy and Momma came to the safe house where a woman took them in.  The next day before the sky was light, she hid them in the back of her wagon and took them to the coast where they got a ship to Philadelphia!

Both: Goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, goin’ to freedom, to freedom glory be.

When Addy and Momma got to Philadelphia, they started a new life!

Both: Followin’ the North Star, all the way to Philadelphia, we’re goin’ to freedom, to freedom, you and me.

But Addy soon found out that even though they weren’t slaves anymore, they still weren’t really free.

Addy: “Momma, the druggist didn’t want to wait on us because we colored!

IMG_3025[1]

We can’t ride inside street cars, because we colored!

IMG_3026[1]

We can’t go inside the ice-cream parlor, because we colored! I thought people in the north are s’posed to be free.  We ain’t free, Momma!”

IMG_3028[1]

Momma: I know it ain’t right, Addy.  Folks do plenty of things they know ain’t right.  But don’t let nobody tell you what to think, ore feel, or dream.  Inside you got your freedom. You can think your own thoughts, dream your own dreams, sing your own song!

IMG_3029[1]

Gotta keep a-goin’, gotta keep a-livin’, gotta keep a-singin’, a-singin’ your own song.  Inside you got your freedom, nobody take it from you, inside you got your freedom, inside you, you be strong.

IMG_3030[1]

Both: Gotta keep the freedom, gotta keep the freedom, gotta keep the freedom, the freedom, you and me. Gotta keep a-goin’, keep the candle burnin’, inside we got the freedom, the freedom glory be.

IMG_3031[1]

Gotta keep the freedom, gotta keep the freedom, gotta keep the freedom, the freedom, you and me. Gotta keep a-goin’, keep the candle burnin’, inside we got the freedom, the freedom glory be.

This story was taken from Meet Addy and a little of Addy Learns a Lesson.
